If the purported collector calls again, you can ask for written verification of the debt and the amount you owe. They are required to provide this by law and making this request is a good start to pinning down whether or not you are dealing with a legitimate debt collector. If you are dealing with a scammer and you are worried that you handed over sensitive personal information, you may want to put a fraud alert or even a credit freeze on your credit reports.
